Installing Q4OS 6.1 🐧 looking around

Q4OS 6.1, codenamed “Andromeda,” is the newest stable Long-Term Support (LTS) release of the Debian-based distribution, promising a five-year support cycle with potential for up to ten years of extended commercial support. This version is built upon the testing branch of Debian 13 “Trixie,” moving the entire distribution to a significantly newer, more modern foundation compared to its predecessor, Q4OS 5 “Aquarius,” which was based on Debian 12 “Bookworm.” The distribution continues to offer a unique dual-desktop experience, featuring the latest modern and feature-rich KDE Plasma 6.3.6 and an updated version of the lightweight classic desktop environment, the Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) 14.1.5. This combination ensures Q4OS remains a versatile choice, catering to users seeking a cutting-edge interface as well as those who prefer a more traditional, resource-efficient desktop style.

  • The most notable changes from the previous Q4OS 5 series stem from the jump in the core operating system and desktop environment versions. Moving from Debian 12 to Debian 13 brings a wealth of updated packages and libraries, coupled with a change from the older Plasma 5 to the brand-new Plasma 6, which introduces significant architectural and visual overhauls. Q4OS 6.1 also upgrades the underlying system to the Linux 6.12 LTS kernel series. Other notable differences include the improved in-house Desktop Profiler tool, which has been updated to let users export, modify, and create customized application profiles easily. However, a key change to be aware of is the dropping of support for the 32-bit (i386) architecture in this release; for users on older 32-bit hardware, the project officially recommends sticking with the Q4OS 5 “Aquarius” series
