Linux 🐧How I Stopped the NVMe Crashes on My Ryzen Laptop

I spent days fighting random freezes, black screens, and "NVMe emergency shutdown" errors on my Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 16APH8 when trying to run modern Linux distros like CachyOS, Fedora 44, and openSUSE Tumbleweed. The system would boot, sometimes reach the desktop, and then freeze completely.

The culprit was the stock Samsung PM9A1 NVMe drive combined with aggressive power management in newer kernels (6.12+). The drive's firmware does not handle deep power states correctly on Linux.

After many tests and failed attempts, I found a combination that works.
What finally worked

Update the BIOS to MDCN40WW
My laptop shipped with 27WW, which made things worse. Updating the BIOS was essential.

Update the EC firmware
This happens automatically with the BIOS update.

Disable AMD Platform Security Processor (PSP)
In BIOS: Security → AMD Platform Security Processor → Disabled
This was the key step that stabilized the NVMe drive.

Use ext4 instead of Btrfs
Btrfs adds heavy small random writes, which triggered the NVMe crash on the Samsung drive.

Make sure the graphical stack is installed correctly
On CachyOS, I had to install the missing X11/Xorg packages.

After these changes, the laptop is stable with kernel 6.12+.

What did NOT work

nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0 kernel flag

pcie_aspm=off kernel flag

pcie_port_pm=off kernel flag

pci=noaer kernel flag

nodiscard in fstab

discard=no in fstab

Btrfs with snapshots

Timeshift

Switching to LTS kernel only

None of these fixed the NVMe emergency shutdown.
