CPU Battle #52 โ Ryzen Z2 Extreme vs Ryzen Z1 Extreme
These two chips power the current and previous generation of handheld gaming PCs โ the Steam Deck competitors from ASUS, Lenovo, MSI, and others. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme is AMD’s 2023 handheld flagship โ 8 Zen 4 cores and 12 RDNA 3 CUs, the chip that defined the first wave of Windows handhelds. The Ryzen Z2 Extreme is AMD’s 2025 successor โ 8 cores in a 3+5 configuration (Zen 5 + Zen 5c) and 16 RDNA 3.5 CUs, a bigger generational jump than the naming suggests. The comparison is close because handhelds are power- and thermal-limited, but the Z2 Extreme has real architectural advantages.
Short version: The Z2 Extreme is faster in both CPU and GPU, more efficient, and the better chip for new handhelds. The Z1 Extreme is only worth it at a significant discount on older hardware.
Specs
The Z1 Extreme is Zen 4 on TSMC 4nm โ 8 cores, 16 threads, boost up to 5.1 GHz, 16 MB L3 cache, and a Radeon 780M iGPU with 12 RDNA 3 CUs. TDP is configurable 9โ30W.
The Z2 Extreme is Zen 5 + Zen 5c on TSMC 4nm โ 8 cores (3 Zen 5 + 5 Zen 5c), 16 threads, boost up to 5.0 GHz, 16 MB L3 cache, and a Radeon 890M iGPU with 16 RDNA 3.5 CUs. TDP is configurable 15โ35W.
| Spec | Ryzen Z2 Extreme | Ryzen Z1 Extreme |
|---|---|---|
| Cores / Threads | 8 / 16 (3 + 5) | 8 / 16 |
| Boost clock | 5.0 GHz | 5.1 GHz |
| L3 cache | 16 MB | 16 MB |
| Process | TSMC 4nm | TSMC 4nm |
| GPU | Radeon 890M (16 CU) | Radeon 780M (12 CU) |
| GPU arch | RDNA 3.5 | RDNA 3 |
| TDP | 15โ35W | 9โ30W |
The core counts and clocks are nearly identical. The real difference is the GPU โ 16 CUs versus 12 โ and the architectural improvements in Zen 5 and RDNA 3.5.
CPU performance
Single-threaded performance favors the Z2 Extreme thanks to Zen 5’s higher IPC. Despite the slightly lower boost clock, the newer architecture delivers roughly 10โ15% more single-threaded performance.
Multi-threaded performance is closer. Both have 8 cores and 16 threads, and the Z1 Extreme’s Zen 4 cores clock slightly higher. In short bursts the two are near even; in sustained loads the Z2 Extreme’s efficiency advantage helps it hold clocks longer. Overall, the Z2 Extreme leads by 5โ15% in CPU workloads.
For gaming, the CPU difference is small. Both chips are fast enough to feed their iGPUs without bottlenecking in most titles. The CPU matters more in emulation and strategy games.
GPU performance
This is the Z2 Extreme’s biggest advantage. The Radeon 890M has 16 RDNA 3.5 CUs versus the 780M’s 12 RDNA 3 CUs โ a 33% increase in core count, plus architectural improvements.
In gaming benchmarks at 15โ25W, the Z2 Extreme leads the Z1 Extreme by 15โ30% depending on the title. In GPU-bound games, the gap is largest. In CPU-bound games, it’s smaller.
The RDNA 3.5 architecture also has better efficiency and improved ray tracing support, though RT is rarely used on handhelds.
For gaming on a handheld, the Z2 Extreme is the clearly better chip.
Efficiency and battery life
Both chips are efficient, but the Z2 Extreme is more so. Zen 5 and RDNA 3.5 deliver better performance-per-watt than their predecessors. At the same TDP, the Z2 Extreme does more work.
In practice, handheld battery life depends more on the device’s battery and the game being played than on the chip alone. But for the same game at the same framerate, a Z2 Extreme handheld should last slightly longer or run slightly cooler than a Z1 Extreme one.
The Z2 Extreme also supports a higher maximum TDP (35W vs 30W), which some handhelds use for “turbo” modes. That gives it more headroom when plugged in.
Platform and features
Both chips use the same platform โ LPDDR5X memory, PCIe 4.0, USB4. The Z2 Extreme supports newer memory speeds and has slightly updated I/O, but the differences are minor.
The Z2 Extreme is the chip in the 2025 wave of handhelds โ the Lenovo Legion Go S, the ASUS ROG Ally refresh, and others. The Z1 Extreme is in the 2023โ2024 wave โ the original ROG Ally, Legion Go, and similar devices.
For a buyer, the chip determines which generation of handheld you’re looking at. The newer devices also tend to have other improvements โ better screens, batteries, and ergonomics.
Software and drivers
Both chips use AMD’s standard graphics drivers. The Z2 Extreme benefits from newer driver optimizations for RDNA 3.5, and future driver improvements will likely focus on the newer architecture.
The Z1 Extreme remains well-supported, but it’s a generation behind. New features and optimizations will come to the Z2 Extreme first.
Price and value
Handhelds with the Z1 Extreme are now discounted โ the ROG Ally and Legion Go often sell for $400โ600. That makes them compelling value for the performance they offer.
Handhelds with the Z2 Extreme are new and priced at $700โ900. They’re faster, but they cost significantly more.
For pure value, a discounted Z1 Extreme handheld is hard to beat. For the best performance and battery life, the Z2 Extreme is worth the premium.
The verdict
The Z2 Extreme is the better chip. It’s faster in CPU and GPU, more efficient, and supports a higher TDP. For a new handheld purchase, it’s the better choice.
The Z1 Extreme is still a capable chip. At current discounts, handhelds with it offer excellent value. If you find one under $500, it’s a strong buy.
The decision comes down to budget. If you want the best handheld experience, the Z2 Extreme. If you want the best value, a discounted Z1 Extreme handheld.
Short version:
Choose the Ryzen Z2 Extreme if you’re buying a new handheld and want the best performance, GPU, and battery life.
Choose the Ryzen Z1 Extreme if you find a handheld at a significant discount and want strong performance for less money.
