๐Ÿ’ช GPU Battle #26 RX 9070 vs RTX 3080 ๐Ÿ’ช

The RX 9070 is AMD’s 2025 RDNA 4 mid-range card โ€” a modern architecture with strong rasterization, much-improved ray tracing, and a reasonable price. The RTX 3080 is NVIDIA’s 2020 Ampere flagship โ€” still fast, still widely owned, and now cheap on the used market. One is new with warranty and modern features; the other is older, power-hungry, but often a bargain. The choice depends on whether you’re buying new or used, and whether ray tracing and upscaling matter to you.

Short version: The RX 9070 is the better new card โ€” faster rasterization, far better ray tracing, more VRAM, and modern upscaling. The RTX 3080 is the better used buy if you find it cheap and don’t care about new features.

Specs

The RX 9070 is RDNA 4 on TSMC 4nm โ€” 3,584 stream processors, 16 GB GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus, ~220W TBP, PCIe 5.0. It supports FSR 4, AMD’s AI-based upscaling, and improved RT hardware.

The RTX 3080 is Ampere on Samsung 8nm โ€” 8,704 CUDA cores, 10 GB or 12 GB GDDR6X on a 320-bit bus, 320W TGP, PCIe 4.0. It supports DLSS 2 and 3 (frame gen only on 40-series and newer), and has capable RT hardware for its generation.

The 3080 launched at $699 and now sells used for $300โ€“380. The 9070 launched at $549 and sits around $550โ€“600 new.

Rasterization

In raster, the RX 9070 is roughly 15โ€“25% faster than the RTX 3080 at 1440p and 4K. RDNA 4 improved efficiency and performance-per-watt significantly over RDNA 3, and the 9070 lands between the 3080 and 3080 Ti in most benchmarks โ€” occasionally ahead of both.

The 3080 is still a strong 1440p card and can handle 4K with settings tweaks, but it’s showing its age in the newest titles, especially at higher resolutions where its 10 GB VRAM becomes a limitation. The 12 GB variant is better but still short of the 9070’s 16 GB.

For pure rasterization, the 9070 is the faster card. Not by a huge margin, but consistently.

Ray tracing

Ray tracing is where the 9070 pulls ahead decisively. RDNA 4’s RT hardware is much improved over RDNA 3, and the 9070 lands close to the RTX 4070 in RT workloads โ€” well ahead of the RTX 3080.

The 3080 has capable RT for its generation, but it’s now three generations old. In modern RT-heavy titles, the 9070 leads by 20โ€“40% depending on the game. In path-traced titles, the gap is even larger.

If ray tracing matters to you, the 9070 is the clear choice.

VRAM and longevity

The 9070’s 16 GB is a real advantage. The 3080’s 10 GB variant is already struggling in some new titles at 1440p with high textures, and 4K is off the table for those games. The 12 GB variant is better but still behind the 9070.

For a card you plan to keep for four or five years, 16 GB is the safer bet. It handles higher resolutions, better textures, and future titles more comfortably.

Power and thermals

The 9070 is far more efficient. At ~220W, it draws roughly 100W less than the 3080’s 320W under load. It runs cooler, needs less cooling, and works in smaller cases with smaller PSUs.

The 3080 runs hot and needs good airflow. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s a real consideration for SFF builds or quiet systems.

Features

The 9070 supports FSR 4, AMD’s AI-based upscaling, which is a significant improvement over FSR 3. It also supports DisplayPort 2.1a, AV1 encoding, and modern APIs.

The 3080 supports DLSS 2 and 3 (without frame gen), which remains excellent. Its NVENC encoder is still useful for streaming, and NVIDIA’s driver stack and feature set are mature. But it lacks DisplayPort 2.1 and newer AI features.

For upscaling quality, DLSS is still slightly ahead of FSR 4 in some titles, but the gap has narrowed considerably. Both are good enough in practice.

Price and value

New at $550โ€“600, the 9070 is a solid value โ€” faster than the 3080, more efficient, more VRAM, modern features, and a warranty.

Used at $300โ€“380, the 3080 is a bargain for anyone who doesn’t need the newest features. It’s still a capable 1440p card and will handle most games well. The trade-offs are VRAM, power draw, and no warranty.

The decision comes down to budget and risk tolerance. If you want a new card with modern features, the 9070. If you want maximum performance per dollar and don’t mind used, the 3080.

The verdict

The RX 9070 is the better card overall. It’s faster in raster, much faster in ray tracing, more efficient, has more VRAM, and supports modern upscaling. For a new build in 2025, it’s the obvious pick.

The RTX 3080 is the better used value. At $300โ€“380 it delivers strong 1440p performance for far less than a new card. If you’re on a tight budget and don’t need the newest features, it’s a smart buy.

Short version:
Choose the RX 9070 if you’re buying new, want modern features, better RT, and more VRAM.
Choose the RTX 3080 if you find it cheap used and want maximum performance per dollar without needing the latest features.
