Same VRAM, same bus, same launch price. The 7900 GRE has more stream processors, but the 9070 is a newer architecture with better efficiency.
Rasterization
In raster, the RX 9070 is roughly 5–15% faster than the RX 7900 GRE at 1440p and 4K. RDNA 4’s architectural improvements and higher IPC give it a small but consistent edge, despite having fewer stream processors.
The 7900 GRE is still a strong 1440p card and handles entry 4K. But the 9070 is faster and more efficient.
For pure raster, the 9070 wins by a small margin.
Ray tracing
Ray tracing favors the 9070 clearly. RDNA 4’s RT hardware is a generation newer than RDNA 3’s, and the 9070 leads the 7900 GRE by 30–50% in RT-heavy titles.
The 7900 GRE’s RT is second-gen and shows its age. In path-traced titles, the 9070 can run natively at playable framerates while the 7900 GRE needs aggressive upscaling.

The 9070 supports FSR 4, DisplayPort 2.1a, AV1 encoding, and modern APIs. FSR 4 is a major improvement over FSR 3 and closes much of the gap with DLSS.
The 7900 GRE supports FSR 2 and 3, which are noticeably behind FSR 4 in quality. It lacks DisplayPort 2.1 and newer media features.

New at $549, the 9070 is a solid value — faster in raster, much better RT, FSR 4, and efficiency at the same price as the 7900 GRE’s launch.
Used at $450–550, the 7900 GRE is similarly priced. It’s a strong card, but the 9070’s advantages make it the better new buy.
At MSRP, the 9070 is the better card. At current used prices, the 7900 GRE is competitive but not clearly better.

The RX 9070 is the better card overall. It’s faster in raster, much faster in ray tracing, supports FSR 4, and is more efficient. At the same MSRP, it’s a clear upgrade over the 7900 GRE.
The RX 7900 GRE is only worth considering used at a steep discount. If you find one under $450, it’s a capable 1440p card. Above that, the 9070 is the better buy.
