GPU Battle #33 โ€” RTX 5090 vs RX 7900 XTX

The RTX 5090 is NVIDIA’s 2025 flagship โ€” Blackwell, 32 GB GDDR7, DLSS 4, and the fastest consumer GPU ever made. The RX 7900 XTX is AMD’s 2022 flagship โ€” RDNA 3, 24 GB GDDR6, FSR 2/3, and the company’s best card until RDNA 4. One costs over $2,000; the other is now available used for $700โ€“900. The comparison is really about price brackets โ€” the 5090 wins everything but value, and the 7900 XTX is the best flagship-class card you can buy on a budget.

Short version: The RTX 5090 is faster in every workload, with dramatically better ray tracing, DLSS 4, and more VRAM. The RX 7900 XTX is a bargain used โ€” still fast at 4K raster, just weak at RT and upscaling. Pick based on budget.

Specs

The RTX 5090 is Blackwell on TSMC 4N โ€” 21,760 CUDA cores, 32 GB GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus, 575W TGP, PCIe 5.0. It supports DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation, and its RT hardware is the fourth generation.

The RX 7900 XTX is RDNA 3 on TSMC 5nm โ€” 6,144 stream processors, 24 GB GDDR6 on a 384-bit bus, 355W TBP, PCIe 4.0. It supports FSR 2 and 3 (without frame gen in most titles), and its RT hardware is second-gen.

The 5090 has more than three times the CUDA cores, 512-bit memory bus, and GDDR7. It’s a different class of GPU.

Rasterization

In raster, the RTX 5090 leads by 50โ€“70% at 4K. It’s the fastest consumer GPU ever made, and no AMD card comes close. The 7900 XTX is still a capable 4K card in most titles, but the 5090 is in another tier.

At 1440p, the gap is larger โ€” 60โ€“80% โ€” because the 5090’s architecture scales well at high resolutions while the 7900 XTX is bandwidth-limited in some scenarios.

For pure raster, the 5090 wins by a wide margin.

Ray tracing

Ray tracing is even more lopsided. The 5090’s fourth-gen RT cores are dramatically faster than RDNA 3’s second-gen, and the gap is often 2โ€“3x in RT-heavy titles. In path-traced games, the 5090 can run natively at playable framerates while the 7900 XTX needs aggressive upscaling โ€” and still struggles.

The 7900 XTX was never a strong RT card, and against the 5090 it’s not close. For ray tracing, the 5090 is the only choice at this tier.

VRAM and memory

The 5090 has 32 GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus โ€” the most memory bandwidth of any consumer card, at over 1.7 TB/s. The 7900 XTX has 24 GB GDDR6 on a 384-bit bus at ~960 GB/s.

The 5090 has more VRAM and nearly double the bandwidth, which matters at 4K, in AI workloads, and in professional applications. For pure gaming, 24 GB is plenty โ€” but for AI and content creation, the 5090’s extra VRAM and bandwidth are transformative.

Power and thermals

The 5090 draws 575W โ€” a massive amount. It needs a high-end 1000W+ PSU, a large case with strong airflow, and a 3-slot or larger cooler. It runs hot but is manageable with proper cooling.

The 7900 XTX draws 355W โ€” also high, but more manageable. It needs a 850W+ PSU and decent airflow. It’s easier to cool than the 5090.

Neither is a low-power card, but the 7900 XTX is more forgiving on system requirements.

Features

The 5090 supports DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation, which can dramatically increase perceived smoothness in supported titles. It also supports DisplayPort 2.1b, newer NVENC encoders, and the latest AI features.

The 7900 XTX supports FSR 2 and 3, which are noticeably behind DLSS 4 in quality and features. It lacks DisplayPort 2.1 and newer media features. Its driver support continues but won’t gain new features.

For upscaling, features, and AI, the 5090 is far ahead.

Price and value

New at $1,999+ (often higher due to demand), the RTX 5090 is the most expensive consumer GPU on the market. It’s priced for enthusiasts and professionals who need maximum performance.

Used at $700โ€“900, the RX 7900 XTX is a bargain. It offers flagship-class raster performance โ€” better than an RTX 4070 Ti in raster โ€” for a fraction of the price. Its weaknesses are ray tracing and upscaling, but if you don’t need those, it’s excellent value.

For pure value, the 7900 XTX wins by a huge margin. For maximum performance, the 5090 wins.

The verdict

The RTX 5090 is the fastest consumer GPU ever made. It wins every workload by a wide margin โ€” raster, ray tracing, AI, content creation. But it costs $2,000+ and needs a serious system to run.

The RX 7900 XTX is the value flagship. It delivers excellent 4K raster performance at a fraction of the price. Its ray tracing and upscaling are weak, but for pure raster gaming, it’s a great used buy.

The decision comes down to budget and workload. If you need maximum performance and can afford it, the 5090. If you want flagship raster performance on a budget, the 7900 XTX.

Short version:
Choose the RTX 5090 if you want the fastest GPU available, need the best ray tracing and AI performance, and can afford the price and power requirements.
Choose the RX 7900 XTX if you want flagship-class 4K raster performance at a used price and don’t need top-tier ray tracing or upscaling.
