GPU Battle #42 โ RTX 5090 vs RTX 3090 Ti
The RTX 5090 is NVIDIA’s 2025 flagship โ Blackwell, 32 GB GDDR7, DLSS 4, and the fastest consumer GPU ever made. The RTX 3090 Ti is NVIDIA’s 2022 Ampere flagship โ 24 GB GDDR6X, DLSS 2, and the top card of its generation. One is two generations newer and in a completely different performance class; the other is a former flagship now available used at a fraction of its launch price. The comparison is really about whether the 3090 Ti’s VRAM and lower price make it a compelling alternative for AI or budget 4K gaming.
Short version: The RTX 5090 wins every performance metric by a wide margin โ often 2โ3x. The RTX 3090 Ti has 24 GB of VRAM for AI at a fraction of the price. For gaming, the 5090 is untouchable. For AI on a budget, the 3090 Ti is still relevant.
Specs
The RTX 5090 is Blackwell on TSMC 4N โ 21,760 CUDA cores, 32 GB GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus, 575W TGP, PCIe 5.0. It supports DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation, and its RT hardware is fourth-gen.
The RTX 3090 Ti is Ampere on Samsung 8nm โ 10,752 CUDA cores, 24 GB GDDR6X on a 384-bit bus, 450W TGP, PCIe 4.0. It supports DLSS 2 with no frame generation, and its RT hardware is second-gen.
| Spec | RTX 5090 | RTX 3090 Ti |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Blackwell | Ampere |
| CUDA cores | 21,760 | 10,752 |
| VRAM | 32 GB GDDR7 | 24 GB GDDR6X |
| Bus | 512-bit | 384-bit |
| TGP | 575W | 450W |
| PCIe | 5.0 | 4.0 |
| Upscaling | DLSS 4 (multi-frame) | DLSS 2 |
| RT hardware | 4th gen | 2nd gen |
| Launch price | $1,999 | $1,999 |
Both launched at $1,999 โ but two generations and four years apart. The 5090 has twice the CUDA cores, more VRAM, and much faster memory.
Rasterization
In raster, the RTX 5090 is roughly 2โ2.5x faster than the RTX 3090 Ti at 4K. It’s the fastest consumer GPU ever made, and the gap to Ampere is enormous. Even at 1440p, the 5090 leads by a huge margin.
The 3090 Ti is still a capable 4K card, but it’s in a different performance class. For pure raster, the 5090 wins by a wide margin.
Ray tracing
Ray tracing is even more lopsided. The 5090’s fourth-gen RT cores are dramatically faster than Ampere’s second-gen, and the gap is often 3x or more in RT-heavy titles. In path-traced games, the 5090 can run natively at high framerates while the 3090 Ti needs aggressive upscaling โ and still struggles.
For ray tracing, the 5090 is in a different universe.
VRAM and memory
Both cards have substantial VRAM โ 32 GB for the 5090, 24 GB for the 3090 Ti. The 5090’s GDDR7 is much faster, with over 1.7 TB/s bandwidth versus ~1,008 GB/s on the 3090 Ti.
For AI workloads, both can run large models. The 5090 runs them faster and can handle larger models thanks to the extra VRAM and bandwidth. But the 3090 Ti’s 24 GB is still significant โ it can run models the 5080’s 16 GB can’t.
For AI on a budget, the 3090 Ti remains one of the best options.
Power and thermals
The 5090 draws 575W; the 3090 Ti draws 450W. Both are power-hungry cards that need high-end PSUs and strong cooling.
The 5090 is more efficient per frame โ it delivers 2x the performance for only 28% more power. But both are extreme cards.
Features
The 5090 supports DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation, DisplayPort 2.1b, and the latest NVENC encoders. DLSS 4 can generate up to three additional frames per rendered frame, dramatically improving perceived smoothness.
The 3090 Ti supports DLSS 2 with no frame generation โ a major feature gap. It lacks DisplayPort 2.1 and newer media features.
For features, the 5090 is far ahead.
Price and value
New at $1,999+ (often higher due to demand), the 5090 is the most expensive consumer GPU on the market.
Used at $700โ900, the 3090 Ti is significantly cheaper and offers 24 GB of VRAM. For AI on a budget, it’s one of the best value cards available.
For gaming, the 5090 is the better card. For AI on a budget, the 3090 Ti is compelling.
The verdict
The RTX 5090 is the fastest consumer GPU ever made. It wins every workload by a wide margin โ raster, ray tracing, AI, content creation. But it costs $2,000+ and needs a serious system.
The RTX 3090 Ti is the AI value pick. Its 24 GB of VRAM makes it uniquely capable for large models at a price the 5090 can’t match. For budget 4K gaming, it’s still capable.
The decision comes down to budget and workload. For maximum performance, the 5090. For AI on a budget, the 3090 Ti.
Short version:
Choose the RTX 5090 if you want the fastest GPU available, need the best ray tracing and AI performance, and can afford the price and power requirements.
Choose the RTX 3090 Ti if you need 24 GB of VRAM for AI or content creation and want the best value per gigabyte of VRAM.
