GPU Battle #35 โ€” RX 9070 XT vs RTX 4090

The RX 9070 XT is AMD’s 2025 RDNA 4 flagship โ€” 16 GB GDDR6, FSR 4, and a $599 MSRP that makes it one of the best value cards of the generation. The RTX 4090 is NVIDIA’s 2022 flagship โ€” 24 GB GDDR6X, DLSS 3, and still the second-fastest consumer GPU in existence. One is a mid-range card punching up; the other is a halo product with no equivalent in AMD’s lineup. The comparison is about price brackets: the 4090 is faster, but the 9070 XT is dramatically cheaper.

Short version: The RTX 4090 is faster in every workload and has 24 GB of VRAM. The RX 9070 XT is far cheaper, still fast, and has modern FSR 4. For most buyers, the 9070 XT is the smarter buy โ€” unless you need maximum performance or the extra VRAM.

Specs

The RX 9070 XT is RDNA 4 on TSMC 4nm โ€” 4,096 stream processors, 16 GB GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus, ~304W TBP, PCIe 5.0. It supports FSR 4, AMD’s AI-based upscaling, and improved RT hardware.

The RTX 4090 is Ada Lovelace on TSMC 4N โ€” 16,384 CUDA cores, 24 GB GDDR6X on a 384-bit bus, 450W TGP, PCIe 4.0. It supports DLSS 3 with single-frame generation, and its RT hardware is third-gen.

The 4090 has four times the core count and 50% more VRAM bandwidth. On paper, it’s in a different class. In practice, the 9070 XT is closer than the specs suggest thanks to RDNA 4’s efficiency.

Rasterization

In raster, the RTX 4090 is roughly 50โ€“70% faster at 4K. It’s the second-fastest consumer GPU ever made, and no mid-range card comes close. The 9070 XT is a strong 1440p card and a capable 4K card in most titles, but the 4090 is in another tier.

At 1440p, the gap is similar โ€” the 4090 leads by 50%+. For pure raster performance, the 4090 is clearly ahead.

Ray tracing

Ray tracing is closer but still favors the 4090. The 9070 XT’s RDNA 4 RT hardware is a major improvement over previous AMD generations, and it lands close to the RTX 4070 Ti in RT workloads. But the 4090’s third-gen RT hardware, with its huge core count, is still 40โ€“60% faster in RT-heavy titles.

In path-traced games, the 4090 can run natively at playable framerates while the 9070 XT needs upscaling. Both work, but the 4090 is faster.

For ray tracing, the 4090 wins.

VRAM and memory

The 4090 has 24 GB on a 384-bit bus; the 9070 XT has 16 GB on a 256-bit bus. The 4090’s extra VRAM matters at 4K with high textures and in AI workloads โ€” it can run larger models and hold more data.

For pure gaming at 1440p, 16 GB is plenty. At 4K with max settings and ray tracing, the 4090’s extra headroom is beneficial but not essential in most titles.

For AI and content creation, the 4090’s 24 GB is a real advantage.

Power and thermals

The 9070 XT draws ~304W; the 4090 draws 450W. The 9070 XT is significantly more efficient, runs cooler, and needs a less powerful PSU. For most builds, it’s easier to live with.

The 4090 runs hot and needs good airflow and a high-end PSU. It’s a flagship card with flagship power requirements.

Features

The 9070 XT supports FSR 4, DisplayPort 2.1a, AV1 encoding, and modern APIs. FSR 4 is a major improvement over FSR 3 and closes much of the gap with DLSS.

The 4090 supports DLSS 3 with single-frame generation, which remains excellent. Its NVENC encoder is still useful for streaming, and NVIDIA’s driver stack is mature. But it lacks DisplayPort 2.1 and newer AI features.

For upscaling quality, DLSS 3 is still slightly ahead in some titles, but FSR 4 has narrowed the gap considerably.

Price and value

New at $599, the 9070 XT is one of the best value cards of the generation. It’s fast, efficient, and modern.

Used at $1,400โ€“1,700, the 4090 is expensive โ€” more than two 9070 XTs. Its price reflects its status as a flagship, and its performance justifies it for buyers who need maximum power.

For value, the 9070 XT wins by a huge margin. For raw performance, the 4090 wins.

The verdict

The RTX 4090 is the faster card by a wide margin โ€” 50โ€“70% in raster, 40โ€“60% in RT, with more VRAM. For 4K max settings, AI workloads, or content creation, it’s the better card.

The RX 9070 XT is the value champion. It delivers strong 1440p and capable 4K performance at less than half the price. For most gamers, it’s the smarter buy.

The decision comes down to budget and need. If you want maximum performance and can afford it, the 4090. If you want excellent value and don’t need the extra VRAM or flagship performance, the 9070 XT.

Short version:
Choose the RX 9070 XT if you want the best value in its class โ€” strong performance, FSR 4, and efficiency at a fair price.
Choose the RTX 4090 if you need maximum raster and RT performance, 24 GB of VRAM for AI or 4K, and can afford the premium.
